Sodium Methallyl Sulfonate (SMAS) copolymer cannot be dosed simultaneously with aluminum/iron inorganic coagulants.Metal ions (Al3+/Fe3+) readily coordinate with anionic -SO3– from SMAS, triggering premature polymer crosslinking and precipitation. The consumed SMAS copolymer loses bridging ability, lowering overall flocculation efficiency. Recommended feeding order: add inorganic salts first, then SMAS flocculant after preliminary floc formation.
