How to clean residual SMAS mother liquor after mixing naphthalene and polycarboxylate production lines?

When switching between naphthalene-based superplasticizer and polycarboxylate superplasticizer production lines, residual sodium methallyl sulfonate (SMAS, CAS 1561-92-8) mother liquor left in pipelines, reaction kettles and transfer tanks may cause cross-contamination, unexpected polymerization, gel formation and performance fluctuation of subsequent batches. Proper cleaning procedures are essential to fully remove sodium methallyl sulfonate residues and guarantee stable product quality.

1. Pre-cleaning preparation

Before starting cleaning, stop material feeding and empty all bulk liquid inside the equipment. Isolate the production line valves to prevent SMAS mother liquor from flowing into other pipeline branches. Collect the concentrated residual sodium methallyl sulfonate mother liquor for centralized recycling or hazardous waste disposal; do not discharge raw SMAS waste liquid directly. Wear chemical-resistant gloves, goggles and respirators to avoid skin and eye irritation from SMAS solution.

2. Step 1: Flush with warm deionized water

Use 40–50℃ warm deionized water for initial circulation flushing of the reactor and pipelines. Circulate the water for 30–60 minutes to dissolve the viscous SMAS mother liquor attached to inner walls. Sodium methallyl sulfonate (CAS 1561-92-8) has good water solubility, so warm water can efficiently wash away most dissolved SMAS residues. Collect all flushing wastewater for later wastewater treatment. Test the liquid after flushing to monitor SMAS concentration.

3. Step 2: Alkali-assisted circulation cleaning for stubborn residues

For stubborn adhered SMAS mother liquor and polymer film formed by partial polymerization of sodium methallyl sulfonate, prepare dilute alkaline cleaning solution (1%–2% sodium hydroxide aqueous solution). Run circulation cleaning for 40–90 minutes under mild stirring. The weak alkaline environment breaks partial cross-linked polymer residues generated by SMAS, peeling off sticky deposits that simple water flushing cannot remove. After alkaline washing, drain the cleaning liquid completely.

4. Step 3: Final rinse and inspection

Rinse equipment repeatedly with deionized water to eliminate alkaline cleaner leftovers. Collect the final rinse water and test for SMAS content and pH value. If the detection result shows sodium methallyl sulfonate residue meets the threshold, the line can be switched to naphthalene or polycarboxylate superplasticizer production. If SMAS residue is still high, repeat the circulation cleaning process.

5. Waste liquid treatment & preventive tips

All wastewater containing SMAS must be sent to industrial wastewater treatment facilities instead of direct drainage. To reduce heavy SMAS mother liquor accumulation during line switching, empty tanks as thoroughly as possible before production conversion. Schedule regular pipeline inspection to avoid long-term buildup of dried sodium methallyl sulfonate solids. Poor cleaning of SMAS mother liquor will lead to unpredictable polymerization reactions and damage the performance of naphthalene series and polycarboxylate superplasticizer finished products.

6. Safety notes

Do not mix concentrated SMAS mother liquor with strong oxidants during cleaning. Ensure good workshop ventilation. All waste containing sodium methallyl sulfonate (CAS 1561-92-8) needs classified storage to avoid secondary chemical reactions.
