Why the copolymer of sodium methallyl sulfonate, acrylic acid and maleic anhydride can effectively inhibit the formation of calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, barium sulfate and other scale types in circulating cooling water systems

The sulfonic acid groups in SMAS molecules strongly adsorb to the growth sites of scale crystals and induce lattice distortion, twisting the crystal structure and inhibiting further crystal growth. Meanwhile, sulfonate groups exhibit excellent chelating and dispersing capacity toward scale-forming cations such as calcium and barium, keeping them suspended as fine particles rather than depositing on pipeline walls.

  1. Synergistic chelation of multi-functional groupsThe copolymer contains sulfonic acid groups, carboxyl groups and anhydride groups simultaneously. It forms stable water-soluble chelates with Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺ and Ba²⁺, locking metal ions in water and preventing them from precipitating with carbonate, phosphate and sulfate radicals.
  2. Crystal lattice distortion effectPolymer molecules adsorb onto the crystal growth surfaces of scale salts, distort the regular lattice arrangement, produce irregular and fine crystal particles, and prevent scale from growing, aggregating and adhering to pipeline walls.
  3. Strong dispersion and solubilization performanceHighly hydrophilic sulfonate groups provide electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance to tiny microcrystals, avoiding agglomeration and deposition. Meanwhile, it increases the solubility of inorganic salts and delays supersaturation precipitation.
  4. Excellent temperature and salt resistanceThe sodium methallyl sulfonate structure features high thermal stability. Under high temperature, high alkalinity and high concentration cycles of cooling water, the molecular chain is not easily hydrolyzed or salted out, maintaining stable scale inhibition performance.
  5. Threshold scale inhibition with broad-spectrum adaptabilityIt shows obvious threshold effect. A low dosage can efficiently suppress multiple scale types including calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate and barium sulfate, with wider applicability than single-monomer scale inhibitors.
  6. Auxiliary corrosion inhibition by adsorption filmThe copolymer forms a protective adsorption film on metal pipe surfaces, reducing corrosion-induced local scaling and under-deposit corrosion, and stabilizing the overall water quality of circulating cooling water.
