Glutaraldehyde 50% (Pharm grade) Solution Technical Data Sheet

Glutaraldehyde (C₅H₈O₂)

Chemical Formula: OCH(CH₂)₃CHO
Molar Mass: 100.12 g/mol
Appearance: Clear, colorless to yellowish liquid
Odor: Pungent, sharp
Solubility: Miscible with water, alcohol, and organic solvents.

Key Properties:

  • Bifunctional Aldehyde: Contains two reactive aldehyde groups (–CHO).
  • High Reactivity: Crosslinks proteins, amines, and other nucleophiles.
  • Polymerization: Can form cyclic hemiacetals or polymers in water.
  • Disinfectant Activity: Effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores.
  • pH-Dependent Stability:
    • Acidic pH (pH 3–4): More stable but less biocidal.
    • Alkaline pH (pH 7.5–8.5): More reactive but degrades faster.

Uses of Glutaraldehyde:

  1. Disinfection & Sterilization (Cold Sterilant):
    • Used in hospitals for endoscopes, surgical instruments, and dialysis equipment (e.g., Cidex®).
    • Effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, HIV, and hepatitis B/C.
  2. Fixative in Microscopy & Histology:
    • Preserves biological tissues by crosslinking proteins (alternative to formaldehyde).
  3. Water Treatment:
    • Biocide in oilfield and cooling tower systems.
  4. Tanning & Leather Processing:
    • Crosslinks collagen fibers for durable leather.
  5. Biotechnology:
    • Immobilizes enzymes and stabilizes vaccines.

Safety & Handling:

  • Toxicity:
    • Irritant: Causes severe eye/skin burns, respiratory issues.
    • Sensitizer: Can trigger asthma or allergic reactions.
  • Exposure Limits:
    • OSHA PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit): 0.2 ppm (8-hour TWA).
  • Protective Measures:
    • Use in fume hoods with gloves (nitrile/neoprene) and goggles.
    • Avoid inhalation; wear a NIOSH-approved respirator if needed.
  • Storage:
    • Tightly sealed in amber glass or plastic, away from light and heat.

Deactivation & Disposal:

  • Neutralize with sodium bisulfite (NaHSO₃) before disposal.
  • Follow local regulations for hazardous waste.
